Prayer Rugs

Sacramental, Spiritual, Embellished, Magnetic.

Representing the divine archway to paradise, antique prayer rugs play both a spiritual role as well as an artistic role as distinctive ornaments used to decorate living spaces.

Characterized by a striking mihrab shape woven into the upper end of a rug, prayer rugs have simultaneously played both a historical role in orienting Islamic prayers towards the direction of the Kaaba in Mecca while also constituting one of the many fine intersections between Islam and art. Prayer rugs have been woven in countless forms, shapes, and designs throughout Persia, Anatolia, and the Caucasus with each type bringing unique regional elements into play.
