Tribal Persian Rugs

Bold, Abstract, Rustic, Daring.

An often-overlooked aspect of Persian rug weaving are the geometric tribal motifs and abstract imagery courtesy of the pastoralist nomads of Persia.

Grazing their livestock throughout Persia, these nomads sheered wool from their own sheep, dyed them using natural dyes from their environment, and weaved rugs with designs reflecting their respective tribes, settings, and needs.

Chiloian Gallery’s collection includes rugs of the Qashqai confederacy of semi-nomadic folk, settled tribal weavers of Afshar and Shiraz, and the semi-nomadic Bakhtiari Luri tribe.
